The conflict in August 2008 resulted with the threat of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) to the civilian population of Georgia. Civilians remain at risk until these contaminated areas convert in to mine / unexploded ordnance (UXO) free areas. Therefore Information Management and Mine Action Program (iMMAP) an International Non Governmental Organization(NGO) is tasked to establish the Explosive Remnants of War Coordination Centre (ERWCC) to assist the Georgian government in addressing the ERW resulting from the August conflict with Russia, as well as legacy minefields remaining in the locations of the Former Soviet Union military installations.

ERWCC Mission Statement:
Eradication of landmines and Explosive Remnants of War, that remain a risk to the people of Georgia, by way of: mutual cooperation, careful coordination and planning, through dynamic leadership setting goals, and standards of excellence.

The Purpose
:
as the center of excellence on Mine Action in Georgia, coordinate the mitigation efforts of the Explosive Remnants of War plaguing Georgia.

The Business: the core activities — the “pillars” — of mine action: advocacy, victim assistance, mine risk education, demining (survey, marking and clearance of mines and unexploded ordnance) and stockpile destruction.

The Values: through responsible leadership; effusively address the “pillars” of mine action.

iMMAP immediately deployed information management and mapping specialists to Lebanon in response to the conflict in the south of that country during summer 2006. These technical experts assisted United Nations and non-governmental organizations struggling to distribute food and medical supplies throughout the country by creating highly advanced maps of surveyed road conditions. iMMAP experts supported the United Nations Joint Logistics Centre (UNJLC) as they monitored road and infrastructure conditions and the impact of contamination by landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO), to ensure safe transport of food and health supplies to the large numbers of Lebanese displaced during the conflict. Operating in Lebanon throughout the conflict phase until the end of 2006, iMMAP personnel improved aid distribution by coordinating safe passage routes and identifying and assessing the overall impact of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) and aerial strike damage. A leader in establishing standardized data collection procedures, iMMAP monitored road conditions and designed road, port and airport condition and logistical maps.

The Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, U.S. Department of State was the first international donor to grasp the tremendous potential of the iMMAP developed Operational Activity Security Information System (OASIS). Based on an OASIS demonstration at a meeting of Humanitarian Mine Action stakeholders in Dubai in late 2006, PM/WRA requested that iMMAP prepare to deploy OASIS to Afghanistan to support the HMA sector, as well as the broader relief and development community there.
