The displaced families arrived in Awdhegle. As of November 2024, the local authorities in Awdhegle appealed to humanitarian partners to provide life-saving assistance to the displaced families who did not receive assistance and had not yet returned to the home before displacement. \n\nAwdhegle is located 20 to 30 kilometres north of Afgooye in the Lower Shabelle region of Southern Somalia. The region has faced challenges due to ongoing conflict, but recent efforts have aimed at stabilization and rebuilding. Awdhegle benefits from its proximity to Afgooye for commercial and logistical support while maintaining a more rural environment. The recent Gu floods have blocked the main supply road from Balcad to Xawaadley following the breakage of the Maandheere River.\n\nHistorically, the Hawaadley water reservoir, part of the Jowhar Off-Stream Storage Project, functioned as a flood mitigation system. During high-flood seasons, when the Shabelle River reached 5.5 meters at the Belet Weyne gauge, water was redirected through the Sabuuni barrage.\n\nHowever, a lack of maintenance has rendered both the Sabuuni and Balcad barrage gates non-functional. Subsequent water level reductions have lessened the flood risk; however, nearly 200 hectares of agricultural land were affected.\n\nIn Afgooye district, the flooding impacted the villages of Baalguri, Raqeyle, Aaytir, Siigaale, Dhagahtuur, and Dambaley, displacing approximately 1,200 individuals. Damage reports indicate the destruction of 130 shelters, 20 community latrines, and one educational facility.\n\nMost of Somalia remains arid, with moderate rains recently reported in southern regions and along the Indian Ocean coast. On August 2, flooding in the Balcad district displaced individuals due to the overflow of a water reservoir in Hawadley, affecting 16 villages.\n\nIn response, a Rapid Needs Assessment (RNA) was conducted during the week of September 9-11, 2024, to evaluate the floods’ impact. However, it is also prone to severe flooding, particularly during high-flood seasons when the Shabelle River can rise significantly. Past interventions, including the diversion of water through the Sabuuni barrage, have been compromised due to a lack of maintenance, resulting in the malfunctioning of critical infrastructure.\n\nIn recent years, the Hawadley Water Reservoir has breached its banks multiple times, with a notable event on August 3, 2024, caused by extreme river inflows that led to flooding and affected communities along the eastern riverbank in Balcad.\n\nIn response, OCHA Hirshabelle, in collaboration with the Balcad ABC and ten local partners, conducted a Rapid Needs Assessment (RNA) on August 28, 2024. The area is struggling under the weight of ongoing violent clashes between al-Shabaab militants and Jubaland forces. These conflicts have significantly worsened the humanitarian situation, leading to a large-scale displacement of families.\n\nAs a result of the violence, 1,122 households have been forced to flee their homes. The Wadajir IDP camp has seen a substantial increase in new arrivals, with 712 families now residing there. This surge in population has placed immense pressure on the camp’s already limited resources and infrastructure. \n\nThis assessment comprised 11 key informant interviews conducted at 11 sites in the Dhobley district from August 5th to 6th , 2024.\n\nThe following partners took part in the assessment – OCHA, LWF, WASDA, WRRS UNHCR. These violent conflicts have significantly impacted the local communities, displacing approximately 810 families.\n\nOngoing military operations have drastically worsened conditions for residents in Harbole, Bibi, Well-Marow, and surrounding villages.
