As part of the inaugural cohort, Tsion embarked on a transformative six-month journey that shaped her skills and career aspirations.\n\nThe first three months immersed Tsion in intensive training sessions, both online and on-the-job, focusing on information management, data visualization and analysis. “I have been introduced to several IM tools and mapping software, and I was able to advance my cartographic skills that I had back in school,” she notes. However, significant disparities persist. The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index places Ethiopia in the 75th position, indicating that Ethiopian women still face significant barriers in terms of socio-political participation. The Ethiopian Gender Development Index 2021, a survey by the Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations, highlights how these barriers not only prevent women from receiving higher education but also limit their overall development.\n\nIn line with the national effort to close the gender gap and empower women, iMMAP Inc. is committed to increasing female representation within its Information Management (IM) internship program. The second cohort of this program has recently concluded. Designed to equip the next generation with essential data management skills for the humanitarian sector, the program provided invaluable hands-on experience to a group of talented graduates. Phase two of HIST is underway, with a focus on expanding its reach and empowering a comprehensive range of humanitarian actors. As a key initiative of this phase an online learning platform has been built to provide accessible training materials and opportunities leading to earning certificates at participant’s own pace. The online learning platform ensures critical IM skills are accessible to participants who cannot attend the training sessions in-person.\n\nAdditionally, HIST is prioritizing localization of IM by offering services to national NGOs and government offices. This strengthens local capacity and ensures information management systems are sustainable in the long term. By including these often-overlooked actors, iMMAP Inc. creates a more comprehensive and collaborative information network for the Ethiopian humanitarian community. \n\nEmpowered with timely and accurate data, humanitarian organizations can now make informed decisions, allocate resources efficiently, and ultimately deliver life-saving assistance to those who need it most. The Use of GIS technology can support to identify the place where affected communities live, informing short path and accessible route to deliver aids, as well as mapping partners presence and coverage, and enabling remote data collection from inaccessible locations. \n\nAs I am working for a cluster, I deal with different types of organization and partners. Each has different expectations of their information management products. Some may prefer statistics while others would rather have interactive IM products. Few others may like video, audio or text. Once access to education is secured, life for women becomes safer. For example, a local Iraqi woman might have more success getting information from another local woman than I, a white American woman. And this is especially true when talking to vulnerable women. \n\nI think that for western Caucasian people there are a lot of pre-made ideas of what gender equality is. It can be easy to forget that form some gender is still very much binary and does not have the same meaning as where you are from. This is also where technology can either be beneficial or horrible as a source of information. There is a risk of appearing of even being a female white savior and obviously we do not want that. \n\nLast year, I worked extensively on women’s economic empowerment, which is another important aspect of our work. I saw some inspiring programs under this portfolio, such as setting up a kitchen for disabled women and supporting women who had never had a job before. It’s challenging work, and there are many structural problems to address, but it’s also really rewarding to see the impact of our programs. I recently started providing training for the general protection cluster. \n\nEvery year, we update the templates for our activities’ indicators. This is not only for general protection but also for different subsectors like child protection, mine action, housing, landing, and gender-based violence. I do the data validation rules in the templates, which incorporate the list of regions, zones, and project codes. Most of the information is pre-embedded in the template to prevent errors or wrongly adding data or indicators. During virtual training, I demonstrate to international implementing partners how to enter the data using dropdown or pre-embedded data. The iMMAP team delivered an initial four-day training of trainers (ToT) for the Public Health Emergency (PHEM) officers and IT experts from EPHI focusing on data collection, data visualization using Microsoft Power BI, and a tailor made open source web application to support the validation of surveillance data. Moving forward, iMMAP is extending training at the sub-national level for over 110 individuals, covering several Woredas in Somali and Oromia regions.\n\nThe development of the mobile system has been beneficial for EPHI as it improves the timely collection of epidemiological data to support the automatization of the surveillance process.
