The task covered 495,000 square meters of contaminated land – an area larger than the entire village of Kuna Masi itself. MAG’s technical teams employed a combination of visual inspection, metal detectors, and specialized equipment to safely identify and remove explosive hazards. Through meticulous work conducted under international mine action standards, the teams located and destroyed more than 500 pieces of explosive ordnance, including artillery shells, mortars, and various types of landmines.\n\nThroughout the operation, iMMAP Inc. Iraq provided crucial third-party monitoring services, ensuring quality assurance and documenting the project’s progress and impact. This independent verification helped maintain high operational standards while measuring the real benefits for local communities. As each section was cleared and verified, life began returning to Hassan Beg Mountain. According to assessments from 25 districts, the disaster has affected 268,000 people, displaced 81,300, and claimed nine lives.\n\n\”The impact of the flooding is much worse because the soil is so damaged from an unprecedented recent drought – years of conflict and al-Shabab militia’s presence also makes building flood defenses and resilience more complex and costly,\” says Nazanine Moshiri, a climate analyst at the International Crisis Group.\n\nSomalia’s position along the Horn of Africa makes it particularly susceptible to both drought and flooding. The country’s two major rivers – the Juba and Shabelle – traditionally bring life-giving water to riverine communities. Somalia conducted eleven Rapid Needs Assessments (RNAs) across the country’s most affected districts, in collaboration with UNOCHA and the Intercluster coordination group (ICCG). These Rapid Needs Assessments, conducted through direct field observations and community consultations, provide time-critical data about displaced populations, infrastructure damage, and immediate humanitarian requirements. Such assessments help humanitarian organizations quickly identify where and how to direct emergency assistance most effectively. These assessments, covering districts from the northern regions to the southern coast, paint a comprehensive picture of escalating humanitarian needs.\n\nThe assessments document severe flooding impacts across Central Riverine areas, southern and the northern regions.\n\nAlong the fertile banks of the Shabelle River, communities face some of the severest impacts. In Jowhar district, nearly all affected residents – 6,900 out of 7,000 – have fled their homes. Afgooye district, a crucial agricultural area, reports over 8,000 affected individuals, with the destruction of four schools cutting off access to education. More than just numbers, accurate gender data can allow for a more in-depth understanding of the severity, frequency, and forms of violence, and identifying those most at risk as well as the common perpetrators. It can pinpoint where violence occurs and assess the impact on the lives of survivors’ and societal well-being.\n\nAs the use of digital technology in even the most basic tasks of our day-to-day lives soars, a relatively new form of violence−technology-facilitated GBV (TF-GBV)−is, unfortunately, becoming commonplace.\n\nA 2024 study of five countries in sub-Saharan Africa found that 28 per cent of women had experienced online violence while a recent UNFPA-University of Nairobi study showed that a whopping nearly 90 per cent of young adults enrolled in Nairobi’s tertiary institutions have witnessed TF-GBV, with 39 per cent having experienced it personally. A UN Women study found that 60 per cent of women internet users in Arab States had been exposed to online violence.\n\nWhile there is growing interest and research, comprehensive data on this form of GBV is hard to come by, including in the global south where gender statistics systems are still being developed.\n\nIndeed, the overall availability of gender data tends to be strongly influenced by the availability of funds with which to build and sustain gender data systems. November 2024 data from UN Women’s Gender Data Outlook shows that countries with reliable domestic funding for gender data perform up to 60 per cent better in terms of data accessibility.\n\nThe data finds that although sub-Saharan African has made great strides in the production of gender data in the past few years, 41 per cent of the data needed to monitor progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG5 on gender equality and women’s empowerment, is still missing.\n\nIn the case of TF-GBV, comparable, reliable data on its prevalence, forms, impact, and drivers is limited across different global regions and social intersections such as race, religion, and disability and migration status. Further, data on the links between online and offline violence is scarce, although we know from many women’s experiences that such links exist.\n\nGender Data in Humanitarian Contexts \n\nWhether triggered by conflict, natural disaster, or public health emergency, humanitarian crises disproportionately impact women, girls, and marginalized groups, placing them at increased risk of violence. The oft-cited statistic that one in three women and girls globally (30 per cent of women aged 15 to 49 years), has experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime, rises to an alarming 70 per cent in humanitarian contexts. Still, given the challenges of collecting data in these contexts, this may still likely be an underestimate of the true magnitude of violence against women and girls in humanitarian settings.\n\nChallenges and resulting gaps notwithstanding, in recent years, there has been progress in collecting gender data in crisis settings. For instance, in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), it is estimated that over one million women have suffered from rape, with 52 percent of women experiencing domestic violence. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, reports of GBV surged with the national GBV hotline, supported by UNFPA, recording 1,515 calls and online requests in just three weeks.\n\nUN Women data from Sudan published in September 2024 finds that the ongoing war has resulted in the largest internal displacement crisis in the world with catastrophic impacts on women and girls not least of all, a more than doubling in rates of GBV. According to the data, by December 2023, more than 6.7 million women, girls, boys, and men were already in need of GBV services, up from 3.1 million before the conflict began. The figure is likely to be much higher now with the protracted crisis. While men and boys in Sudan are also victims of GBV, most of the cases involve women and girls.\n\nThe figures signal and reinforce that GBV is a pervasive and urgent issue that must be systematically addressed by humanitarian actors, and that data should ultimately help shape the development of evidence-driven interventions in each country.”},{“component”:”hc_space”,”id”:”deGxj”,”css_classes”:””,”custom_css_classes”:””,”custom_css_styles”:””,”size”:”m”,”height”:””},{“component”:”hc_image”,”id”:”Cv7Es”,”css_classes”:””,”custom_css_classes”:””,”custom_css_styles”:””,”image”:”https://immap.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/image1170x530cropped-1024×464.jpg|530|1170|100036878″,”alt”:””,”thumb_size”:”large”},{“component”:”hc_wp_editor”,”id”:”XAmFy”,”css_classes”:””,”custom_css_classes”:””,”custom_css_styles”:””,”editor_content”:”

An intersectional approach to data collection and analysis is thus vital to ensure that no one is left behind.\n\nFactors Contributing to Data Gaps:\n

2. Limited Access and Resources: Access constraints, resource limitations, and capacity limitations within organizations impede systematic data collection.

3. Misunderstanding of Gender Data: A narrow view of gender data as merely sex-disaggregated statistics limits its potential.

4. Exclusion from Decision-Making: Women and girls are often excluded from decision-making, hindering the incorporation of their experiences.

5. Technology’s Double-Edged Sword: New technologies offer innovative data collection approaches but raise ethical and safety concerns.

An inclusive process to develop and implement laws and regulations with the participation of survivors and women’s organizations will enhance transparency and the use of data and the development of standards of accountability for the technology sector will help in addressing digital violence.\n\nFor humanitarian contexts important considerations come into play:\n

Over the years, we’ve deployed 32 highly skilled information management experts to support the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Area of Responsibility (AoR) and Gender in Humanitarian Action (GiHA) Working Groups co-hosted by these agencies. Their work has involved integrating GBV and overall, Gender Analysis considerations into the Humanitarian Program Cycle, developing regional GBV guidelines, creating GBV stakeholder mapping analysis, as well as GBV warning systems.\n\nThrough strategic partnerships with UNFPA and UN Women, as well as other UN Agencies and international NGOs we support in this field, iMMAP Inc. has been able to foster coordination and information sharing, allowing us to enhance GBV-focused and Gender data driven responses. One initiative that stands out is the advisory role iMMAP Inc. has provided to ‘Bridging Gaps: Essential Gender Data Toolkit for Humanitarian Action’, which provides clear guidance on how to collect gender sensitive data related in emergency settings. This toolkit is vital in helping frontline workers approach data collection in a respectful and informed manner.\n\nHowever, collecting and utilizing data on GBV presents several challenges. While all our experts are well equipped with tools and skills for collection, analysis and assessment of GBV sensitive data, they still encounter obstacles such as:\n

   1. Difficulty in data collection due to the sensitivity of the subject; survivors are often reluctant to share personal experiences.

   2. Insufficient secure systems and protocols for collecting data from survivors.

   3. Duplication of efforts, as multiple actors work with the same data using different tools and methods, leading to poor analysis.

\nAddressing these challenges requires investing in capacity building, standardizing tools and protocols, fostering coordination, and focusing on survivor-centered approaches to GBV data collection and analysis.\n\nLooking ahead, I believe several innovations are necessary for addressing GBV more effectively:\n

1. Indicators standardization: Tailor indicators to specific cultural, social and security contexts of the humanitarian settings, with a survivor-centered approach. Utilization of established frameworks such as the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) GBV Guidelines and the Minimum Standards for GBV Programming as a starting point for qualitative indicators

2. Anonymization and confidentiality: Invest in advanced anonymization techniques to protect survivor’s identities while ensuring data remains actionable.

3. Strengthen data collection approaches: Expand story-telling methods while maintaining ethical standards; engage diverse groups in the sampling — including women, men, youth, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ communities — to ensure we capture a comprehensive understanding of GBV.

\nFor me, the role of information management and data is transformative, serving as a backbone for driving change in how we understand and address GBV. Ukraine is focused on fostering a strong and collaborative team dynamic. The organization is committed to cultivating a work environment that encourages collaboration, supports the seamless onboarding of new employees, and strengthens effective cooperation across all projects and initiatives.\n\nA standout example of iMMAP Inc. Ukraine’s commitment to team unity was the Onboarding and Team-Building Workshop held in Kyiv in November 2024. This event, collaboratively organized by the Capacity Building, HR, and Operations teams, brought together staff from across Ukraine—including team members from Dnipro, Odesa, and Kharkiv—to connect, learn, and grow as a cohesive unit. International colleagues also participated virtually, ensuring a truly inclusive experience.\n\nThe workshop had two key objectives: to ensure a seamless integration for new team members and to deepen the bonds among existing staff.\n\nViktoriia Mamalyha, an Information Management (IM) Officer based in Odesa, joined iMMAP Inc. with high expectations after receiving glowing feedback about the organization during her work with other humanitarian organizations. Reflecting on her experience, she shared, \”I was thrilled to become part of such a respected organization.\”\n\nViktoriia is one of 12 new team members who joined iMMAP Inc. Ukraine this fall, contributing to two flagship projects: Provision of Information Management Support to Ukraine Crisis Response Clusters and Third Party Monitoring (TPM) of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) Clearance in Ukraine.\n\nBoth projects, launched in the spring and fall of 2022, have grown significantly. The Information Management (IM) Cluster Support project now boasts a team of 24 IM Officers, developers, and a capacity-building unit, stationed in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odesa. These teams, supported by international staff, provide dedicated IM and system development support to six clusters, two sub-clusters, multiple Technical Working Groups (TWGs), and numerous cluster partners.\n\nMeanwhile, the TPM project has expanded to include eight team members who monitor and verify mine action activities across central, eastern, and southern Ukraine, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of clearance operations. Together, these efforts exemplify iMMAP Inc.’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s humanitarian response with expertise and innovation.\n\nToday, iMMAP Inc. Ukraine proudly consists of a team of 45 dedicated professionals, including office staff, united in their mission to support humanitarian efforts.
