What was once a source of life became a cause of devastation, as accidents claimed both human and animal lives, forcing local communities to abandon much of their ancestral land.\n\nThe Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) was one of the 20th century’s longest conventional wars, turning the mountainous border regions into heavily militarized zones. Hassan Beg Mountain’s strategic location along potential invasion routes made it a key defensive position, leading to intense artillery bombardment and the laying of extensive minefields. When the war ended in 1988, these remote mountainous areas, critical for local agriculture and pastoralism, were left severely contaminated with unexploded ordnance. Military records from the period indicate that both armies used a wide range of munitions – from anti-personnel mines to artillery shells – many of which failed to detonate on impact. The task covered 495,000 square meters of contaminated land – an area larger than the entire village of Kuna Masi itself. MAG’s technical teams employed a combination of visual inspection, metal detectors, and specialized equipment to safely identify and remove explosive hazards. Through meticulous work conducted under international mine action standards, the teams located and destroyed more than 500 pieces of explosive ordnance, including artillery shells, mortars, and various types of landmines.\n\nThroughout the operation, iMMAP Inc. Iraq provided crucial third-party monitoring services, ensuring quality assurance and documenting the project’s progress and impact. This independent verification helped maintain high operational standards while measuring the real benefits for local communities. As each section was cleared and verified, life began returning to Hassan Beg Mountain. This Kurdish agricultural community quietly demonstrates how clearing land mines does more than remove dangers – it restores the local farming lifestyle.\n\nBefore 1988, these fields sustained generations of local families through wheat and barley cultivation and livestock grazing. This changed when the former Iraqi government converted the farmland into a heavily mined defensive line. The transformation forced farming families to abandon their fields, leaving behind their livelihoods and long-established farming traditions.\n\nThe mines claimed multiple victims among farmers who risked working their land to support their families. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the contaminated fields created an impossible situation for local farmers, either abandon their primary source of income or risk their lives trying to cultivate dangerous land. It is known for its ancient landmarks, such as the Ziggurat Temple of Ur, and the Mesopotamian Wetlands, a popular historical and natural tourist spot. The people of the city rely on farming, livestock, labor, and public sector jobs to sustain themselves. However, due to its location near Basra Governorate in the southernmost part of the country, Thi-Qar became a strategic location for Iraqi military bases during the two Gulf Wars against Iran and Kuwait (1980-1991). As a result, the governorate is now riddled with unexploded ordnance (UXO) from heavy airstrikes, bombings, and abandoned ammunition left behind by the Iraqi army.  \n\nIn response to the priority needs for communities surrounded by explosive ordnance (EO) threats in Thi-Qar and other Southern governorates of Iraq, many Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) collaborate with local government support to launch EORE campaigns through sessions targeting different societal groups. It can be easy to forget that form some gender is still very much binary and does not have the same meaning as where you are from. Despite the end of formal military operations against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) the situation remains problematic, making humanitarian help precarious. This is due to incomplete rehabilitation of housing, essential services, livelihood opportunities, internal displacement, and weakened national social cohesion. Furthermore, Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) and other explosives pose a serious threat to displaced people and returning families as they attempt to rebuild their lives. \n\nThe goal of this project was to help partners better understand the country’s current situation. This was done by sharing information about accidents, crimes, explosive hazard occurrences, national security operations, natural disasters, and public demonstrations. The information was then made available through monthly interactive products that included the number and types of incidents, patterns over time and location, trends in types of casualties like targets and initiating actors, as well as casualties. The incidents data were collected from reputable news sources, and their accuracy was checked by comparing data from at least three separate reports. The geoportal allowed users to have direct access to high-level summary information with a single click on the map or filter search (e.g., by incident type or province) to see detailed information on specific incidents or incidents related to certain actors. The dynamic map enabled access to each incident record’s details and source of data. global HMA-focused events such as these by sharing the results of our capacity building and analyses to inform stakeholders.\n\nAs an official observer at the APMBC, iMMAP will be participating in future Review Conferences to monitor the inner workings of the treaty, contribution of the States Parties, and the side events delivered by the HMA stakeholders.\n\niMMAP first participated in the Review Conference as an Observer in November 2019, in Oslo, Norway, during which Mr. Ruan noted his pleasure with iMMAP’s attendance and observer status at the Review Conference.\n\nThe review conference included side events that were delivered by various stakeholders, highlighting the challenges and accomplishments in AP mine reduction activities and provided an opportunity for Currently, 8.5 million people in Iraq are vulnerable to the risk of landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and 1,390 Km2 of land is rendered useless solely due to landmine contamination, including agricultural land and urban areas.\n\nIn view of the severity of the contamination, in 2008, the republic of Iraq acceded to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC) to stop the use, stockpile, and transfer of Anti-Personnel (AP) Mines and to destroy the remaining AP Mines by 2018. However, this goal could not be reached because of the war against ISIS, which not only impeded the clearance activities but caused further destruction and contamination.\n\nIn this context, the Iraqi government’s commitment to the treaty entails several obligations. They also produced reports on the Humanitarian Mine Action capacity and the funding needed to remove all known landmines in Iraq.\n\nMoreover, iMMAP’s technical experts advised the authorities and With the iMMAP-developed SMART System in place, UNMAS Iraq is now well prepared to contribute to MDR.\n\nThrough SMART, iMMAP established an internal IM system for UNMAS Iraq and an external IM system connecting all UNMAS Iraq operations with the IM systems of the Directorate of Mine Action (DMA). SMART contributes to simplify the humanitarian mine action (HMA) IM processes and increases the level of control over these processes.
