The Israeli military began ground interventions on October 23. Almost two months into the conflict, the humanitarian situation is immensely dire, with swathes of the Strip totally destroyed and essential infrastructure in ruins. \n\n69% of Gaza’s hospitals are non-functional (as of November 16, Health Cluster). Over 14,800 people, including 6,000 children, have already lost their lives (as of November 23, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office). Children represent 40% of the casualties, which is unprecedented. Eighty percent of the population, 1.7 million people, are also internally displaced (as of November 20, UNWRA). In the West Bank, 231 Palestinians, including 59 children, have been killed according to OCHA, as of November 27.  \n\nCritical shortages of water, food, medicine, and electricity persist. When I arrived, my first task was to understand how I could help UNDSS security analysts from a GIS point of view. My main goal is to improve their quality of life – to help them do their jobs more efficiently and more easily. The current security analyst in the field inherited an outdated data gathering and visualization that was not suited for the context in which they were working and costing them valuable time. So, we had to find a way to streamline their operations. Hundreds of armed groups are controlling large swathes of the country, mainly in the capital, Port-au-Prince, metropolitan area.  \n\nSince January 2023, the  Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has recorded 5,599 cases of armed-group-related violence , a sharp increase from the previous year. This marks a further deepening of the  profound humanitarian crisis in the island nation. Distressingly, 40% of the confirmed cases are children under 10. There are also pockets of people in the North, in the Artibonite, and in the South that was hit by an earthquake in 2021,” said Alca Kuvituanga, an IMO seconded to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for the Shelter and Non-Food Items Cluster \n\nInsecurity is the driving force behind the displacements, with 93% attributed to gang violence (IOM). “Gangs are determined to expand their territory through violent confrontations,” describes Alca. “This leaves the population with no recourse but to flee – to escape the violence.” \n\nBeyond territorial control, these armed groups are also strategically targeting pivotal areas to secure control over vital access routes. \”In certain regions, humanitarian aid workers and the general population find it virtually impossible to move without encountering checkpoints, making humanitarian access one of our greatest challenges”, explains Kevin Ancavil, an IMO deployed with OCHA in Port-au-Prince. \”To address this, we are monitoring and mapping the expansion of armed groups territories and their movements. Since hostilities erupted on April 15th, intense battles have continued to rage across various states of Africa’s third-largest country. \n\nThe dire situation has forced a staggering 5.5 million people to flee their homes, either within Sudan or to neighboring countries (OCHA). On one hand, Sudan is embroiled in a complex and unpredictable conflict. On the other hand, this conflict is making the country’s pre-existing challenges, that impacted the country before April 15th, even worse. And on top of that, humanitarian access is very problematic in large swathes of the country. \n\nRoadblocks, checkpoints, and looting further obstruct the efforts of humanitarian actors trying to reach affected populations. Now, we stand at 68%,\” noted Bright. “So, I believe our activities, the information we are gathering, are bringing momentum for the donors to add more funds to support the response through evidence based decisions”  \n\nAt the Food Security cluster, Hamzah has also observed significant progress. \”Upon my arrival, we were working with data from only 6 partners, covering 9 states. Immersed in a mock-up humanitarian emergency building on fictive datasets created by our team, participants were tasked to perform a Multi-Sector Initial Needs Assessment (MIRA), feed the findings into key strategic documents, produce several IM products – such as dashboards and maps – and share data on HDX, while ensuring P-Codes and other best practices implemented, prior presenting the findings, tools and products. \n\nThanks to the presence of iMMAP’s senior management in Istanbul, participants were also able to meet and interact with iMMAP’s CEO, William Barron, and iMMAP Operations Director, Abdon Trowonou, during the week on a range of topics including procedures, policies, and iMMAP’s history and future.
