Sudan faces an escalating humanitarian crisis from the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), mainly in and around Khartoum. The Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) reported over 600 fatalities and 5,100 injuries as of May 9, 2023, though the true toll is likely higher due to outdated figures.
Violent clashes in West Darfur have claimed at least 450 lives, while the number of internally displaced people within Sudan has more than doubled from 334,000 on May 1 to about 736,000 on May 9. Displaced individuals are scattered across 15 of Sudan's 18 states, with White Nile, West Darfur, and Northern states hosting the largest numbers.
The conflict has severely disrupted healthcare services, with most facilities in Khartoum not functioning adequately. Shortages of food, water, fuel, and cash have become prevalent, particularly in areas that usually rely on supplies from Khartoum. Despite these challenges, humanitarian organizations are striving to continue their operations. The 2023 Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) has been revised to $2.56 billion, an $800 million increase, to assist 18 million people until year-end, highlighting the dire circumstances. Even before the conflict, Sudan was grappling with record-level humanitarian needs, with 15.8 million people, roughly a third of the population, requiring assistance, the highest level since 2011.
