Approximately 14.21 million people experience high levels of acute food insecurity.\n\nOur study ‘Exploring Perceptions and Opportunities for Agricultural Trainings in Afghanistan’ aimed to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of agricultural training initiatives. We believe that addressing these gaps and preferences is essential for enhancing agricultural productivity, supporting livelihoods, and ultimately contributing to the broader economic and social development of Afghanistan.\n\nUsing our partner Premise’s platform for remote primary data collection, we gathered rapid and extensive data from diverse geographical areas through crowdsourcing to identify key challenges and needs.\n\nKey Findings (from the 405 households surveyed):\n

And humanitarian Cash-Based Assistance (CBA) is seen as an innovative and cost-effective approach to address humanitarian needs, boost local economies, create jobs, and equip communities to cope.\n\nHowever, for CBA to be truly efficient, it needs to be designed with appropriate context knowledge of Afghanistan, a clear understanding of community preferences, household needs, market conditions, and suitable cash delivery mechanisms. To understand community perceptions of cash programs and inform future interventions, we collaborated with the Afghanistan Cash and Voucher Working Group (CVWG) and used remote data collection via the Premise platform. For national and local organizations, limited analysis capabilities and a shortage of proper analytical tools pose substantial barriers. The reliability and availability of data also raises concerns. A troubling 30% of respondents questioned the reliability of available data, while 33% reported facing situations where necessary data was simply nonexistent. These findings point to critical gaps in the data ecosystem, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced practices and resources across all stages of the data lifecycle.\n\nChallenges extend to monitoring and evaluation (M&E) processes as well. Limited access to reliable data hinders effective accountability efforts across the sector. However, the nature of these challenges varies by organization type. National and local groups primarily struggle with insufficient capacity and training in M&E methodologies. International organizations, on the other hand, face difficulties in engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders, including local communities and authorities. This gap in experiences suggests that increased collaboration and knowledge sharing among partners could yield significant benefits. Interestingly, risk management emerged as a top choice for future M&E training topics, reflecting the complex and volatile nature of the operating environment in Afghanistan.\n\nDespite these challenges, the survey reveals a strong desire for improvement. An overwhelming 96% of respondents expressed interest in enhancing their data literacy skills, even though most rated their current abilities as good. While data collection methods are familiar to many, there’s keen interest in developing stronger data analysis techniques. Improving data quality and validation competencies also emerged as priority areas, aligning with the organizational gaps identified earlier. One of the significant endeavors was the launch of the Regional Food Security Network (RFSAN) with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of Jordan in 2015.  This initiative broadened our response capabilities to include key aspects of food security, showcasing our strengths in remote sensing and market analysis.   \n\nAs the project expanded, iMMAP Inc. took the lead in managing the Information Management Resource Center (IMRC),  funded by the USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance (BHA).  The IMRC was instrumental in empowering food security initiatives, primarily through comprehensive data analysis and management in Syria.
