Over 500 tailored-made IM products were developed, supporting the humanitarian response with evidence-based information across the northeast of Nigeria, with a focus on Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) states. \n\nFurthermore, IMOs working across seven humanitarian sectors actively engaged in improving the IM capacity of 635 humanitarian operators. Complementing the humanitarian IM capacity strengthening sessions which iMMAP provided throughout the year, it has also implemented its internship program – made possible by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) iMMAP signed with the University of Maiduguri, Borno state in January 2021. \n\nThe presentations by iMMAP IMOs also provided insight into the various challenges recorded at the sectoral level, including the lack of data coverage for some crisis-affected communities across BAY states, delayed data submission, and inadequate partner presence. \n\nThe sectoral presentations were followed by insights provided by the Borno State Agency representatives for the Coordination of Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Response (BACSDAHR) and University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID). These presentations highlighted the results and achievements of the strong partnership with iMMAP, with the hope to better serve the vulnerable communities across the BAY states in the coming years. \n\nThe BACSDAHR presentation, delivered by the Manager of the Borno State Data Center, Dr. Alhaji Maaji Umar Mustapha, outlined the various aspects of the support iMMAP provided to the agency, including iMMAP participation in the agency’s strategic development planning retreat in 2020, the training of staff and interns in data management and visualization and the support provided in the design of the state’s 25 years development plan. The project recorded nine training rounds, over 100 partner organizations across NGOs, UN agencies, government institutions, and academia. In addition, 210 participants benefitted from iMMAP capacity building activities, with the average knowledge gained standing at 80% across all training sessions.\n\nThroughout the year in review, iMMAP selected 16 interns to acquire practical IM experience for a period of three months. Six out of the 16 graduated interns are currently working with iMMAP. Since November 2016, iMMAP has been deploying information management officers (IMOs) to support humanitarian sectors and partners with information management expertise in their response to the crisis in northeast Nigeria. \n\nThe event was chaired by the iMMAP Nigeria Country Representative, Ghada Hatim, who delivered opening remarks. Among the attendees for the workshop were representatives from USAID, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and the Nigeria INGO Forum who made significant contributions during the event with questions, comments, and suggestions. IMOs made presentations on their respective sectors and sub-sectors including Early Recovery and Livelihoods, Nutrition, Food Security, Health, WASH, CCCM & Shelter/NFI, Education, Child Protection, Gender-Based Violence, and the Cash Working Group. These presentations provided insight into the sectoral support activities implemented throughout the review period and the accomplishments and challenges faced. Furthermore, iMMAP´s senior capacity building officer provided an overview of the accomplishments and the outlook for the capacity building program in Nigeria for the year ahead. \n\nThe day was finalized by iMMAP’s operations director, Abdon Trowonou. In his closing remarks, he expressed a sense of pride at the volume and quality of the work each IMO has been able to achieve over the past year despite the challenges faced as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The number of people in need (PiN) of urgent assistance increased from 7.1 million in 2019 to 7.9 million in 2020, with 80 percent of them being women and children. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have further increased PiN figures to 10.6 million.\n\nTo improve the overall protection activities in northeast Nigeria, iMMAP initiated the first round of capacity building training targeting National NGOs working under the Protection Sector with the support of the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) in collaboration with the Protection Sector and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This capacity-building training took place from July 6th to July 10th, 2020 at the ICT Laboratory in the University of Maiduguri with the necessary COVID-19 safety measures put in place to ensure the safety of all attendees. Themed ‘Harnessing the power of data for evidence-based decision making’, this training round was attended by 12 participants consisting of ten graduates of the University of Maiduguri and two staff of the Borno State Agency for Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Response. \n\nThe purpose of the program is to strengthen capacities to optimize information management tools, platforms, technologies, and best practices for a more effective humanitarian response to the northeast Nigeria crisis and in alignment with humanitarian principles. Although many restrictions have now been lifted, it remains pertinent to observe COVID-19 safety measures such as a one-meter social distancing rule and the use of face masks and hand washing/hand sanitizing products. \n\nWith these measures in place, participants were given the option of attending the program in-person at the University of Maiduguri ICT lab or online. One participant opted to attend sessions remotely whilst the other 11 participants attended the program in person with strict adherence to COVID-19 safety measures. of their coverage. \n\nThe District Coverage Overview map is based on the COVID-19 Multi-Sector Humanitarian Country Plan for Afghanistan, which outlines the strategic response approach to the outbreak for the next three months (April-June 2020). buildings, roads, and rivers, which were then made publicly available through HDX. Methodologies proposed were all-inclusive, based on knowledge exchange and a participatory approach in collaboration with private partners, traditional practitioners, and DPS and BCZ, the health provincial and district central offices, respectively.\n\nIn the field, NGOs, the United Nations, and the ministry staff relied upon the OSM base map, or the OSMAND navigation tool, to identify buildings. 3,134 points, schools, villages, markets, and churches have been integrated into the OSM platform during the OSM training. Furthermore, 3,586 health structures have been cleaned and added to the OSM base. The geographical coverage goes from Bukavu to Bunia via Beni (South Kivu, North Kivu, Ituri).\n\nBuilding upon this success, iMMAP and OSM plan to involve local actors and capture their knowledge to improve the understanding of the area. This support will continue through the revision of the Humanitarian Response Plan 2020 to incorporate the COVID-19 response.\n\nSupport to the Health Cluster in the COVID-19 response\n\niMMAP supports the Ethiopia Health Cluster’s COVID-19 response by developing a 3W tool (who is doing what, and where) that captures the response activities of 30 partners operating in different locations of the country, allowing to identify gaps and optimize the distribution of protective materials. Moreover, we help enhance coordination through developing an online response monitoring tool that regularly captures the activities carried by health cluster partners, which are analyzed and presented through a weekly COVID-19 bulletin. Additionally, iMMAP produces a weekly COVID-19 dashboard that reports on 18 monitoring indicators developed in collaboration with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), helping to monitor and In addition, COVID-19 Risk Maps have been produced for Yobe state to assist in the planning of the response to the pandemic, with similar assessments for other BAY states ongoing.\n\nMultisectoral Support to the COVID-19 Response\n\nIn response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Food Security Sector (FSS) IMO has been actively supporting the FSS team to establish guidelines for the sector’s partners COVID-19 response. This includes establishing a COVID-19 task force on the various subsectors under FSS such as Food Assistance, Remote Monitoring, and Agricultural Livelihoods. The sector IMO has also been working with partners to provide an accurate picture of who is doing what, where, and to whom, as well as acting as a liaison to other sectors – including the WASH sector – to implement a collaborative approach in camps during this pandemic.\n\niMMAP’s WASH sector IMO is closely working with partners to develop an adaptive continuity plan that establishes procedures for scenarios such as restriction of movement. Other activities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic involve the development of IM systems for partners to report COVID-19 activities, report gaps in the availability of hygiene enhancers, and track hygiene levels in health facilities.
