Over the past 30 years, Somalia has faced political instability, frequent conflicts, and environmental and economic shocks. Extreme weather, including flash floods, has contributed to widespread food insecurity and displacement in recent years. Around four million people are internally displaced, while an estimated four million are food insecure and need assistance. The reliance on pastoralism and rain-fed agriculture makes the population highly vulnerable to climate shocks and natural disasters. In 2024, around 6.9 million people in Somalia are expected to need humanitarian assistance.
iMMAP Inc. has been operating in Somalia since 2019 to enhance the coordination of information management in the country, aiming for more effective and efficient humanitarian responses nationwide. In 2023, we established a specialized IM Unit, and also led on the deployment of seven Information Management Officers (IMO) through the Stand-by Partnership, facilitating direct IMO support to the Health, UNHCR Protection, UNICEF Nutrition, and OCHA Coordination clusters.
