In 2016, iMMAP Inc. embarked on a critical mission to provide information management (IM) support to the humanitarian response in northeast Nigeria, specifically in the Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) states. This region continues to experience high levels of displacement, loss of livelihoods, halted agricultural production, and a major protection crisis due to conflict and insecurity. The 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan for Nigeria estimates that 8.3 million people across the BAY states require humanitarian intervention, with 1.3 billion dollars urgently needed to support the 6 million most vulnerable people targeted to receive aid in 2023.
Thanks to support received from the American People through USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), iMMAP Inc. provides critical IM services to partners across the three states. These services include support to the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), sector and working group members, the Borno State Agency for the Coordination of Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Response (BoACSDHR), the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), and the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola, Adamawa state.
iMMAP Inc. also works directly with state governments, academia, and humanitarian partners to provide capacity strengthening in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states. This includes an ongoing memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UNIMAID and AUN on the implementation of an IM capacity development and internship program for new graduates.
In 2021, iMMAP Inc. established the Humanitarian Information Analysis Unit (HIAU) to provide skilled IM support to partners working in coordination with OCHA. iMMAP Inc.'s Information Management Officers (IMOs) collect and consolidate data, support assessments and analyses, design information products, facilitate training sessions, and provide co-leadership on certain initiatives. These activities provide access to quality, reliable, and timely data that support targeted humanitarian coordination among aid responders.
Overall, iMMAP Inc.'s work in northeast Nigeria is critical to providing effective and efficient humanitarian assistance to those in need.
