Commenced in November 2016, the iMMAP Inc. Nigeria program has been providing cutting-edge information management (IM) support to the humanitarian response in northeast Nigeria, specifically in the Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY) states for eight years now. The next phase of the project will expand its support to the northwest states of Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
The humanitarian crisis in the BAY states started in 2009. The region continues to experience increased protection and displacement challenges due to the prolonged conflict and insecurity, with food insecurity constituting a critical part of the humanitarian needs. Children and women, especially girls, still bear the major brunt of the crisis. The lives of children under the age of five years are threatened by acute malnutrition. Affected communities are also grappling with disease outbreaks, loss of livelihoods, threats of violence, among others. The 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan for Nigeria estimates that 7.9 million vulnerable people need humanitarian assistance at varying scales. The humanitarian community requires a total of $926.5 million to support the targeted 4.4 million most vulnerable people in the BAY states to receive life-saving aid.
